Hey there! 👋 I'm Martha Karpoff

I’ve been many things in my life – a good student, a cut-order clerk for a carpet factory, a bartender, a short-order cook at a hospital, a clerk at a quarter horse registry, a fund analyst, and a pension analyst.

In the Philippines i wrote proposals for a Philippine non-profit. One grant was from the Sasagawa Peace Foundation for a village project near Mt. Mayon.  Another was from the German development fund to evaluate Farmer’s Centers around the country.  In Indonesia, I taught an English language school on a sugar plantation.

Park Hae Jin Does the Kama Sutra or the Sweetest Story Ever Told is an allegory of what many people go through in life: isolation, survival, fear, love, humor, and having a relationship with mysterious forces in life that seem to control their existence.

The story is about an older American woman swept up in a kidnapping of a young handsome K-drama actor at the Incheon Airport in South Korea.  They are both taken and held in a shipping container with no doors or windows.  Their source of food, clothing, and entertainment materials come from their kidnappers who survey them from the unreachable ceiling.  They nickname them ‘the ceiling gods.’

The two of them have cultural and language issues to overcome. As they go through several phases in their captivity, they learn to navigate their way through their fear to live their true destiny. Read More…

A Beautiful Book Tour is a brash farce about the absurdity of an older American woman meeting a younger K-drama male star who falls instantly in love with her.  It was written in protest of K-dramas that end up with the lovers possibly, just maybe, holding hands in the last episode.

Emi Kaye is the author of Park Hae Jin Does the Kama Sutra or the Sweetest Story Ever Told.  She is invited to Korea by an unknown person to meet Park Hae Jin, handsome star of many K-dramas and the subject of her book.  They hit it off and immediately make love.  She returns to the United States.

Mr. Park sets up a book tour with his agency to sell her book and get to know her better.  However, he already ‘knows’ her quite well and is constantly in a sexual heat to be with her.  He colludes with his bodyguards and translator to cover up their relationship, because K-drama fans in Korea do not like ‘their’ stars to date or get married.  Unexpectedly, Emi turns out to be quite charming and funny. Two Loves

Karri Moody, author of Park Hae Jin Does the Kama Sutra or The Sweetest Story Ever Told, her husband Mitchell Moody, and Park Hae Jin, K-drama star, are taken to a hill to be executed but are saved by Karri’s quick thinking. Eight people are killed that night. Karri, Mit, and Hae Jin are forced to become their own detectives, models, planners, TV stars, nurses, imposters, comedians, and friends. Lions, Yale, baseball, magic elixirs, Netflix, bravery and inventiveness all come into play as Karri, Hae Jin, and Mit use sex to clarify the future. Love is the only answer.

Inspiration, motivation, and journey

Journey. I started watching Netflix during the pandemic. One of the first K-dramas I watched was Man to Man. I was impressed by the Korean actor, Park Hae Jin, but was somewhat disappointed in the ending. I said to myself, I can do better. I found out that I really couldn’t. I didn’t know anything about writing a screenplay. I thought that maybe if I wrote a book first, I could then turn the book into a screenplay. You’ll see in the book Park Hae Jin Does the Kama Sutra or The Sweetest Story Ever Told that I’m trying to fit it in to approximately 16 chapters so it could be made into a K-drama. I don’t think it would make a good K-drama, but it would make a great stage play.
